Understanding the Bill of Materials (BOM) in Fashion

What does a BOM include?

  1. Main Fabric: The primary material, including composition and weight (e.g., 100% Cotton Jersey, 180 GSM).

  2. Trims & Hardware: Buttons, zippers, rivets, eyelets, and drawstrings.

  3. Threads: Specific color codes (like Pantone numbers) and thread thickness.

  4. Labels: Main brand label, size tag, care instructions, and hangtags.

  5. Packaging: Polybags, tissue paper, and barcode stickers.

Why detail matters: If you do not specify the exact zipper quality in the BOM, the factory will use the cheapest one they have in stock to save money. If you do not specify the thread color, they might use a shade that clashes with your fabric. A precise BOM ensures your product quality remains high and consistent across every production run.
